who we are

tracy professional lg

Tracy Dudley, Founder
As a true Colorado Native, Tracy has been an active volunteer in the local volleyball community for nearly 15 years.  Picking up the sport late in life, she has played in and organized countless adult competitive leagues & tournaments across the state—including virtually every format: hard-court, grass, sand, 2s, 4s, 6s, coed, reverse coed & women’s.  Approximately 2 years ago the business that operated the Inverness volleyball building went under and all of the clientele were stranded without a home.  After much hesitation and external persuasion, Tracy reluctantly agreed to take on the arduous task of long-term success of this fantastic volleyball resource.  With Tracy's magic touch, the place became busier and livelier than ever with positive energy that was contagious.  Having created the largest youth volleyball organization in Colorado, she is now on to her next challenge of expanding beyond the south metro area!

By trade, Tracy is a successful marketing professional who operates her own research and analysis company.   She has played an integral role in consultation to many Fortune 500 companies, such as Kellogg's, Microsoft, Target Stores, Wells Fargo, Kroger, Procter and Gamble, McDonald's and many more.  More than 2 decades ago, she graduated with Phi Beta Kappa outstanding academic honors from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor’s Degree in Adult and Child Psychology.  From this same University, she also holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing--graduating with Beta Gamma Sigma academic honors and professional excellence.  Tracy is a published author who also currently writes for her local community newspaper.  She is the wife of her high school sweetheart and has 2 young sons who can’t stand volleyball.

“My only reward in facilitating volleyball programs is happy players.  I do what I do because I want people to have fun and develop a life-long passion for volleyball.”

"Tracy, I think you do a great job!  We are a happy customer and have referred many girls your way.  Please know you do RIGHT in our lives...keep up the good and hard work!"

scott20pic1

Scott Bunker, Coach
Scott likes to go "all out" on things.  When both of his daughters took a strong interest in volleyball, he built a full-sized court in the back yard where they play all of the time.  While he played for fun in college, Scott did not take a serious interest in volleyball until he started volunteer coaching a couple of teams through Castle Rock Parks & Recreation.  At one point, a head coach had abandoned his daughter's team, and he felt compelled to step in and help the players because it was the right thing to do.  After continuing to coach for several subsequent sessions, Scott unexpectedly found himself addicted to volleyball and coaching.

Despite being a long-time friend of the Dudley family, Scott found his way to South Metro Volleyball through other word of mouth.  Immediately stepping into assistant coaching under one of our best coaches, Scott was hooked on the South Metro philosophy of high-caliber positive coaching and empowering players to reach their maximum potential.  Scott holds a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science from Colorado State University, with a minor in Meteorology.  He currently works as a Lead Software Engineer for one of the region's largest telecommunications corporations.  By passion, he is an avid landscaper, tree expert (has planted more than 120 trees), musician, skier, and acclaimed Christmas light authority and aficionado: RockinChristmas.com.

"I enjoy how challenging the game of volleyball is.  I enjoy working with the players, watching them grow and realizing their true potential: giving them the confidence, skills, tactics and mental fortitude to believe in themselves and perform at a high level.  I feel that I’m not only developing volleyball players, but the leaders and coaches of tomorrow.  I bring a creative and practical approach to coaching.  I find that my main strengths are: character, integrity and determination.  If my players emulate me in these ways, they will be able to climb any mountain they choose."

After graduating college, Katie began coaching summer camps through Skyhawks Sports Camps.  She also coached elementary school volleyball for several years before joining the South Metro Volleyball family.  Katie's volleyball career has helped shape the person she is today, and she hopes that her passion for the sport can help others grow to love it!  She also coaches volleyball to help kids realize their potential and understand that through practice, dedication, and most importantly FUN, anyone can enjoy the sport of volleyball.

coach greg

Greg DeRoeck, Coach
Greg has been playing high level volleyball since he was a freshman in high school.  In addition to playing high school volleyball, he also simultaneously played for the Golden Bear Volleyball Club, then the Moraga Volleyball Club in California.  Greg’s team qualified for the Junior Olympics all three years he played for Moraga, which included a second place finish only behind UC Berkeley at the National Club Championships.  Impressively, Greg also spent numerous years as a competitive grass doubles player, earning several championships, including NCVA Coed Doubles titles.

During high school, Greg was awarded MVP and captain of his team—a team that won two high school league championships under Greg’s leadership as a player.  In College, Greg’s team came in second at the Men’s National College Volleyball Championships.  It was during this time that Greg caught the coaching bug.  He has several years experience as a successful coach of junior college, high school, and club teams.  Under his head, the McKinleyville High School volleyball team quickly worked its way from last place in the district up to a championship contender.  He made similar accomplishments as a coach for Club Shasta, an elite volleyball club in the same Northern California area.

Greg recently took a team of complete strangers he had never met before on a very impressive run to the Division 1 championship game of a No Limits Competitive Youth Volleyball tournament.  He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Humboldt State University in California and holds multiple Microsoft technical certifications as an IT consultant in Castle Rock.  He has also played alto saxophone professionally, and enjoys spending time on and off the course with his golf pro wife and two children.

"We were very impressed with Coach Greg's skills and the drills he ran.  He was able to help each player grow in the areas they needed the most help, as well as strengthen and correct in others.  We just wanted to let you know that the whole team thought his coaching was great!"

“There is nothing more rewarding than to watch an athlete develop his/her performance on the court.  Not only does this take great instruction from the coach, but a passion to learn from the athlete, the confidence to believe he/she can improve, and a willingness to step out of his/her comfort zone and push him/herself to be a better player.  This passion, confidence and willingness to improve can either be reinforced by a coach, or squandered.  I believe it is an inherent responsibility of a coach to support an athlete in his/her endeavors to be the best he/she can be.”

"I am very thankful for Coach Karyn--her energy is so positive and enthusiasm for the game so contagious.  Thank you again, we look forward to many more seasons of fun!"

steve schmidt 2

Steve Schmidt, Coach
Steve has been playing volleyball since age 18, participating in many doubles tournaments all over Arizona, California, and Colorado.  He won several awards in Arizona, as well as many men's A and coed A tournaments here in Colorado.  Steve started coaching more than 5 years ago and has coached for Castle Rock Parks & Recreation, Douglas County Dolphins, and South Metro Volleyball.  The majority of the girls he has coached have moved on to major club volleyball.

Steve has also coached youth basketball and baseball.  He holds a Bachelor's of Science from Arizona State University, and is a regional sales manager for a building products distributor in Denver.

"The most rewarding thing about coaching is seeing the players improve and progress.  I love watching kids that I have coached in the past play at the varsity and junior varsity levels in high school.  My goal is to have all of these young players find the same passion for volleyball that I have and to continue to play for the rest of their lives."

brent timmons

Brent Timmons, Coach
Brent started coaching youth recreational volleyball through the City of Parker several years ago, always emphasizing player improvement AND a good experience with volleyball.  He has also coached for Parker Hawks, developing every player so that they made the A and B teams at their respective schools.  He started as a parent and volunteer assistant coach at South Metro and has advanced to one of our best coaches in very little time.

After growing up in Southern California, Brent believes volleyball is just as much for boys to love as it is for girls.  While still actively involved in playing volleyball as an adult, he also heads several athletic programs and youth church teams.  Perhaps even more impressive, is that he runs his own track club, Parker Panthers.  Brent loves all sports, but competed collegiately in the decathlon for Bringham Young University.  He also earned a Master's of Accountancy from the school and is currently a CPA operating as CFO for a small gold mining company headquartered in Colorado.

"I think if you teach the correct fundamentals (like trying to have three touches on each side), you will make better players who learn the sport the right way so they can build and grow.  Winning is nice, but doing the right thing is more important.  I also embrace the philosophy of letting the volleyball teach the girls - that is to say, running practices/drills efficiently so they get a high amount of touches during the short amount of time we have to practice."

"I love to coach where I can.  I feel that stressing the fundamentals at this level is going to give players the most benefit."

jon waddington 2

Jon Waddington, Coach
Jon has been active in sports since early youth.  He played soccer and basketball in high school, then started playing volleyball as a freshman in college. He played all 4 years at the University of Northern Colorado, where he went on to catch the coaching bug. While at UNC, his teams as a player and as a coach went to nationals on several occasions.  He continued to play as an adult at a very high level in men's indoor 6s and outdoor doubles.

Jon has a Bachelor of Arts Degree as a double major in Philosophy and History.  He currently works as a programmer and IT Manager for an investment firm in the DTC area.

"Volleyball most rewards learned skills over raw athleticism and is the most team-dependent youth sport.  You can't accomplish much without help from your teammates and that creates a uniquely unified team atmosphere where you get a cohesive 'we're all in it together' approach.  It's fun to watch as the kids embrace that idea.  I love the sport, and I love to watch a new generation pick it up and keep it going the right way."
